Nurse residency program has launched in New York City. The first such program in the city's public hospital system provides new nurses with specialized training, support, and mentorship during a year-long residency that is being implemented at 24 public hospitals. Using the curriculum developed by Vizient/American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the program is designed to "enhance nurse satisfaction, performance, and retention," according to the New York City mayor's office. During the first year, 500 newly hired nurses will participate, joining over 93,000 new graduates who have done so nationwide since 2002. The program, in place at over 480 health care organizations, has significantly reduced first-year-nurse turnover rates compared with the national average.
