HEART HEALTH AWARENESS
Recognize American Heart Month
This February the American Heart Association sponsors American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the top killer in the United States; it's responsible for the loss of more lives than any other major cause of death, according to the American Heart Association's Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics-2004 Update. The report compiles statistics for the most recent year that data are available; it notes that CVD killed 931,108 Americans in 2001.
In observation of the month, join the American Heart Association in urging patients or family members to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and support community automatic external defibrillator (AED) programs. Explain that CPR is a skill that can help save the lives of victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Up to 95% of sudden cardiac arrest victims die because CPR and defibrillation arrive too late. By supporting community AED programs, you'll help ensure that people are trained in CPR and that AEDs are strategically placed throughout neighborhoods.
