Abstract
Goiter was described in the early medical literature, yet it was not connected to a deficiency of iodine until the 19th century. The connection between the development of goiter and a deficiency of iodine took many years to develop. This article describes the history of goiter and how scientists realized that the reason for this disease was a shortage of iodine.
