Few high school students report discussing the prevention of sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy with their providers during routine physical examinations. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found that only 42.8% of female students and 26.4% of male students discussed these topics with their clinicians. By senior year, 65% of high school students have had sexual intercourse, and 20% have had four or more sexual partners. Thus, the CDC concludes, it's important for clinicians to initiate discussions with adolescent patients about sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy prevention.
