The CDC identifies a potential public health risk from tianeptine. The misuse or abuse of tianeptine, an atypical antidepressant that is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (but which can be obtained in some European, Asian, and Latin American countries), has increased nationwide from 2014 to 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Data were retrieved from the National Poison Data System and reviewed for all tianeptine exposures reported by U.S. poison control centers from 2000 through 2017. The drug carries the risk of neurologic and cardiovascular adverse effects and can be lethal. Read the full report in the August issue of the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
