AMERICAN SOCIETY OF NUTRITION WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT, CATHERINE FIELD, PHD, RD
The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) named Dr Catherine J. Field as president for the 2018-2019, taking over for Dr Mary Ann Johnson, who remains on ASN's Board of Directors. Dr Field outlined her leadership priorities, and they included strategic planning for ASN's 100-year anniversary in 2028, advancing membership, publications, meetings and education, and advocating for increased research funding. Dr Field is a professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta in Canada and holds an adjunct position in the Department of Medicine and Dentistry. She has served ASN as an international spokesperson, associate editor for Advances in Nutrition, member of the Scientific Program Committee, member of the Diet & Cancer and Nutrition Immunology Research Interest Sections, and most recently as vice president. Dr Field is also a member of the Canadian Nutrition Society, where she was an early proponent of ASN's first joint membership offering with that organization. She obtained a bachelor's degree in Applied Human Nutrition from the University of Guelph, an master of science degree in Nutrition from the University of Toronto, and a doctor of philosophy degree in Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Alberta. She has published more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and received a volunteer recognition award from Dietitians of Canada, the McCalla Scholarship and Killiam Professorship from the University of Alberta, the ILSI Future Leaders award, and also the Earl Willard McHenry Award for Leadership and Service in Nutrition from the Canadian Nutrition Society. NOW AVAILABLE: Global Harmonization of Methodological Approaches to Nutrient Intake Recommendations: Proceedings of a Workshop
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop to explore the evidence for achieving global harmonization of methodological approaches to establishing nutrient intake recommendations. Participants reviewed current nutrient intake recommendations, discussed the feasibility of harmonizing approaches to setting such recommendations globally, examined the development of principles by which they may be applied in diverse contexts that relate to individuals or populations or regulatory purposes, and examined perceptions and acceptance of nutrient intake recommendations by different stakeholders. EUROPEAN UNION INFORMATION CENTER TIPS TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE
Every day, large quantities of food are wasted. Reducing food waste would save money and natural resources and help feed those in need. In recognition, The European Union Information Center (EUFIC) has joined Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO's) SAVE FOOD-The Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction-which is based on the concept of partnership and collaboration. Phyllis Elaine Bowen
Nutrition Today mourns the loss of our former Editorial Advisory Board member, Phyllis Bowen, PhD. She retired from the University of Illinois at Chicago 9 years ago after teaching and doing research in nutrition science there for many decades. She was a pioneer in the study of [beta]-carotene, functional foods, and prostate-related nutrition studies. Phyllis helped create and served on the Scientific Advisory Board for the California Prune Growers. Phyllis was enthusiastically involved in many things: gardening in her rooftop garden, which was in Chicago's Oak Park Garden walk in 2017, singing in the chancel choir at Pilgrim Congregational Church, and creating and leading adult classes in religion and theology. She also served as the first board chairman of the Alliance of Hope, a service to survivors of a family suicide, after losing her son Joshua to suicide many years ago. She was journal editor of the 2017 and 2018 Conference for Global Transformation of the Wisdom Community within Landmark Education. She studied oil painting and had a keen eye for good design.
She was a magnificent teacher and enabled so many students to achieve doctor of philosophy and master degrees. Phyllis constantly encouraged her students and rigorously insisted that they all learn to write well. She was known by many of her acquaintances as a deeply caring conversationalist whose questions often profoundly improved the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Our condolences to her family, she will be sorely missed by all, including all of us at Nutrition Today.
IN MEMORIAM: PROFESSOR MADAME CHEN CHUNMING
Nutrition Today reports the passing of Prof Chen Chunming of Beijing, China. Madame Chen was the founder and past director of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI) Focal Point in China during the period from 1993 to 2004, and she remained active in ILSI thereafter. She also served as the senior advisor on science for the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the honorary president of Chinese Nutrition Society until the end of her life. She was a delightful and perceptive scientist and human being. Prof Chen Chunming worked in population nutrition and nutrition policy research throughout her whole career. She pioneered the national nutrition and health survey system in China. The data collected through this survey system formed the scientific basis for the National Program for Child Development and the Ministry of Health's first National Report on Nutrition Among Children Aged 0-6 (2012). It is also the main source for the World Health Organization (WHO)/UNICEF report on child nutrition in China. She was also very active in international nutrition community. She served as a member of the WHO Expert Panel on Nutrition during 1979-2002, vice chairperson of the first FAO/WHO International Conference on Nutrition (1992), member of the WHO Reference Group for drafting NCD prevention strategy (2002-2004), board member of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition during 2002 to 2011, and a member of the Global Agenda Council on Nutrition of the World Economic Forum (2009). Mme Chen has received many awards, including the Certificate of Achievements in Nutrition (1992) by FAO, Gopalan Award on Nutrition (2003) by the Indian Nutrition society, the Living Legend (2009) by the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, and the Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society Award (2018). Among the awards she received in China, there were Wu Jieping-Paul Jansen Award of Merit (2014), Chinese Nutrition Society Lifetime Achievement Award (2015), the Soong Chingling Pediatric Lifetime Achievement Award (2017), and the Anti-poverty and Child Development Lifetime Achievement Award (2017). She will be missed by her fellow countrymen and also by the larger international nutrition community.
