By 2030, U.S. deaths from cirrhosis are predicted to triple. Cirrhosis deaths have increased since 2009, especially in young people and in whites, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans, according to a study published July 18 in BMJ. Among the states, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Arkansas saw the highest increases in cirrhosis-related deaths. Before 2010, deaths from alcohol-related diseases were largely in people 65 years of age and older. Young people, especially Native Americans, may benefit from intensified screening and treatment programs. Raising taxes on alcoholic beverages may also reduce alcohol-related disease, suggest the researchers.
