Hospital-acquired conditions decline from 2014 to 2016. The rate of hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) among adult inpatients dropped by 8% between 2014 and 2016, from 98 to 90 conditions per 1,000 discharges, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's national scorecard on HACs issued in June. This continues a decline reported from 2010 to 2014-adding up to an estimated 350,000 fewer HACs and about 8,000 fewer inpatient deaths in 2015 and 2016 compared with 2014, with savings of about $2.9 billion. However, while adverse drug events (which account for the highest HAC rate, at 33.4 per 1,000 discharges in 2014) dropped during this period, pressure ulcers (the second highest, at 21.6 per 1,000 in 2014) increased, with 127,000 more cases in 2015 and 2016.
