Welcome to our new Nutrition Today Editorial Advisory Board members! John R. Lupien, DSc, now of the University of Massachusetts, comes with a background of many years of leadership in the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy, where he resides. Before that, John spent many years in the Food and Drug Administration. He brings special expertise in international nutrition to our Board.

John W. Erdman, Jr, PhD, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is a food scientist with expertise in nutrition and food safety. His work exploring the role of the carotenoids in chronic diseases is well known. He has served as vice-chair of the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, and on many committees associated with developing the Dietary Reference Intakes. He is our food science and metabolism infielder!

Carole Palmer, Ed D, RD, is professor and head of the Division of Nutrition and Oral Health Promotion at Tufts University's School of Dental Medicine. Her specialty is nutrition in oral health. Early in her career, she was an amateur actress, and she continues to have a great interest in communications and brings considerable expertise in the use of the mass media in nutrition education. Carole has just published a fine new book entitled Diet and Nutrition in Oral Health (Prentice Hall, 2003).

Henderson New President of ILSI Global
In January 2003, Dr Gary Henderson became president of International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI). At his inaugural, he provided an address summarizing the strengths of ILSI. These included its worldwide reputation for sound science, a network of scientists, active and effective branches of ILSI worldwide, and solid relationships with government, regulatory, and other agencies. ILSI's new executive director is Dr Eileen Kennedy, who is also a Nutrition Today Board member.

The ILSI North America Technical Committee on Food Components for Health Promotion has published Scientific Criteria for Evaluating Health Effects of Food Components in Critical Reviews of Food Science and Nutrition, volume 42 (supplement), 2002. The Committee outlines a 7-step strategy for evaluating and substantiating potential health benefits for foods or food components as a general framework.
In Memoriam
Dr Max Milner, a nutrition scientist who served as executive director of the American Institute of Nutrition (now American Society for Nutrition Sciences) and as an active member of the Protein Advisory Group of the United Nations, died in January 2003.
Adele E. Dronsick, emerita dietetic internship director of the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass, died in February 2003. Ms Dronsick taught a generation of dietitians to be sensitive to ethnic and cultural differences in their patients and to translate their preferences into healthful food choices.
Lt Commander Willie McCool was the pilot of the space shuttle Columbia and son of Barry and Audrey McCool, a member of the American Dietetic Association since 1968, and currently on the faculty of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Our deepest sympathies to the McCool family.
Diva Sanjur, PhD, longtime professor at Cornell University's Department of Nutrition whose work on cultural aspects of nutrition was widely acclaimed, died in late 2002. Our sympathy to her husband, former provost of Cornell, Dr Mal Neshein, and her many colleagues, friends, and students.

Zoumas Elected ILSI North America President
Barry Zoumas, PhD, Professor at the Pennsylvania State University, was elected as president of the International Life Sciences Institute of North America (ILSI NA) at its January 2003 meeting. Dr Zoumas served previously as vice-president and chief technical officer at Hershey Foods Corporation. He then served at world headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy. Dr Zoumas succeeds Dr James Behnke, who has just completed his 3-year term. Dr Behnke had a distinguished career at the Pillsbury Company for many years, where he served as senior vice-president.
Future Leaders' Award
ILSI NA has announced two Future Leader awards for 2003.
Megan Ann McCory, PhD, is a scientist II at the Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. Her research will focus on eating patterns, energy regulation, and lipid metabolism-she will investigate segmental and epidemiologic approaches. She will focus specifically on issues such as the glycemic index and fiber, which might affect energy intake. Dr McCory received her PhD in nutrition from the University of California at Davis.
Hope A. Weiler, PhD, RD, received the future leader's award to study if consumption of dietary long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) early in life has an affect on subsequent growth and bone mass. Hope is an associate professor in the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology, and in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Manitoba, Canada. Dr Weiler's PhD is from McMaster University, Canada.
New Human Research Accreditation Program Announced
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) have formed the Partnership for Human Research Protection, Inc. (PHRP), to protect the safety and rights of participants in clinical trials in hospitals and research facilities in the United States and abroad through a new accreditation program. The accreditation process will focus on these standards: organization responsibilities, institutional review board structure and operations and consideration of risks and benefits, and informed consent. The public may comment on the draft standards by visiting http://www.ncqa.org.
WHO Releases Report on Diet and Disease
Nutrition agencies and consumer groups are praising a new report by the World Health Organization, entitled "Diet, nutrition, and the prevention of chronic disease." The report links diet to the development of many chronic diseases and encourages world governments to take steps to help their populace improve their diets and increase their physical activity.
