Each year an estimated 600 to 1,600 newborns fall or are dropped while in the hospital. The Joint Commission offers new recommendations for preventing the problem, which may occur while a baby is held or carried by a parent, health care worker, family member, or visitor. Among the recommendations: discourage parents from sleeping with their babies in the hospital bed, organize hourly rounds to note when new mothers are drowsy and help them place babies safely in bassinets, and place signage in hospital rooms to remind mothers to place infants in bassinets when mothers are sleepy or after they have taken pain medication.
