PenJet Needleless Injector

The PenJet Corporation, a Santa Monica, CA-based company that specializes in drug delivery systems, was granted a patent in September 2002 for its gas-powered, needleless injector. This product has nearly as few parts as a conventional disposable syringe, and when produced in large quantities, will cost approximately $1 each. It is designed from high-impact plastic and can be shipped pre-filled with medication. The PenJet is small-only about half the size of a conventional fountain pen, and can be used to inject a wide range of medications-from liquid medications and vaccines to lyophilized drugs-without a needle. The item's patent (US patent no. 6,447,475) covers its gas-charged metal canister with inline barrel valve that reduces the number of parts, simplifies assembly, and assures a consistent injection. Safety features include a protective cap and safety ring that avoids accidental triggering. All of these features are intended to make injections easier for both clinicians and patients who must self-inject. B. Braun Horizon Outlook IV Safety Infusion System Is First to Address Proposed FDA Bar Code Requirements

B. Braun Medical Inc. announced its Horizon Outlook IV Safety Infusion System last fall. It is the first infusion system to meet the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiative to develop a regulation on bar code labeling for human drug products to reduce the number of preventable drug errors in the United States.

The Horizon Outlook IV Safety Infusion System uses barcode technology to ensure the "right" patient is receiving the "right" drug in the "right" dose from an "authorized" clinician. Its patented DoseScan barcode technology creates a primary level of safety-with automated checks and balances that augment the manual procedures commonly used today. Secondary protection is provided by DoseGuard software, which notifies clinicians if institution-defined dose limits are exceeded. The company believes that the combined technologies help to reduce human error and enable hospitals to provide a higher level of infusion medication delivery safety for patients.
