Abstract

Infection is the leading complication associated with central venous access and one of the most important complications of parenteral nutrition therapy. Most of these infections are caused by gram-positive cocci. However, gram-negative bacilli and yeast infections have become problematic over the past decade. This article reviews the etiology, pathogenesis, management, and current treatment strategies, focusing on central venous access infections.
