Study finds increased infant mortality from unintentional suffocation. An analysis of data from 1999 to 2015 finds that suffocations and strangulations in bed "substantially" increased mortality in U.S. infants younger than 12 months. The authors, writing in the April issue of JAMA Pediatrics, noted that no reason for the continual increase could be determined. They posited, however, that the use of unsafe products and improved reporting practices could be two of many factors involved, and they call for continued and enhanced efforts by government and nongovernment agencies to address the problem.
