Only 50% of teens with depression are diagnosed before they reach adulthood. Primary care providers and pediatricians could help to identify them, say new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, updated to include recommendations for people ages 10 to 21. Anyone 12 years of age and older should be screened yearly using a questionnaire during wellness checkups, sports physicals, or other office visits. Teens with a family history of depression, trauma, and substance abuse need closer attention. Families of depressed teens should remove firearms and dangerous drugs from the home. Primary care providers should consult with mental health experts. The new recommendations, available at http://links.lww.com/AJN/A118, are based on focus groups with youths, parents, and primary care providers, and on systematic literature reviews.
