It's right around the corner! The Sixth Annual Nursing Knowledge: Big Data Science Conference is scheduled for June 14 to 15, 2018, in Minneapolis, MN, with preconference activities on June 13. We wait with great anticipation to hear from our Working Groups on all of their impressive accomplishments and new developments, and we send out a warm welcome to all who have an interest in advancing the alignment and use of health data for improved health outcomes and research and are considering attending for the first time. The conference brings together policy and thought leaders in healthcare, government, the private sector, education, and advocacy organizations to learn from one another and advance an action plan for sharable, comparable data.
Our main conference features national speakers on two hot topics requested by conference attendees: social media, analytics, and professional relevance and interprofessional practice in a big data world. Our two keynote speakers are Barbara Brandt, PhD, the director of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education at the University of Minnesota, and Anne Pryor, MA, social media strategist and executive coach.
The hands-on work and discussions engage all Working Groups: Care Coordination, Clinical Data Analytics, Context of Care, Education, Encoding and Modeling, Engage and Equip All Nurses in Health Information Technology Policy, Mobile Health Data, Nursing Value, Social Behavioral Determinants of Health, Transforming Documentation, and National Nursing Data Repository. Following reviews, intense dialogue, and working sessions, conference participants are invited to develop the 2018-2019 National Action Plan in each of these initiatives.
Preconference Session-June 13
We offer a preconference session for all those who want depth of content in areas that are newly emerging or of particular challenge. This year we have identified three tracks that are in demand.
Track 1: Hands-on Full Life Cycle Data Science Workshop-Steve Johnson, PhD; Lisiane Pruinelli, PhD, RN
The purpose of this track is to conduct hands-on data science techniques including exploratory data analysis, data preparation, and model development. Participants will first learn important concepts and theory of data science and then discuss the challenges of working with electronic health record (EHR) data including issues of data quality, data complexity and non-standardization. Participants will interact with and take away a fully functioning environment with synthetic data and step-by-step recipes for a data science project.
Track 2: Social Media Analytics and Mobile Technology-Martin Michalowski, PhD; Thomas R. Clancy, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN
The purpose of this track is to increase knowledge of the relationship between social media and mobile health for practice, quality, and research. Exemplars will be provided of how social media data drive the Get Well Network Interactive Care Model, proactive monitoring with sensory technology for dementia caregivers, integrated systems that address unmet clinical needs in point-of-care testing and treatment, and visualization social media data.
Track 3: Streamlining and Transforming Documentation-David Boyd, DNP, RN; Shannon Hulett, DNP, RN, CNL
The purpose of this track is to share exemplars from practice for transforming and streamlining nursing documentation. Updates from the Office of the National Coordinator/American Nurses Association National initiative on simplifying nurses' clinical documentation under the leadership of Rebecca Freeman and Kelly Cochrane will be included. This track is well timed as nurses, the most frequent users of EHRs, spend unnecessary time using EHRs, and current designs do not facilitate knowledge-driven care. Transformations will support better data for extraction to ultimately drive and measure improvements in patient outcomes.
