Hollister Incorporated, the global medical device manufacturer, has announced the results of their multicenter, international randomized controlled trial that was designed to examine the differences in ostomy skin barriers and their impacts on stoma care and the incidence of peristomal skin complications. Published in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing, the study concluded that Hollister's CeraPlus skin barrier, infused with ceramide, caused study participants to experience a clinically meaningful reduction in peristomal skin complications compared with a skin barrier that did not contain ceramides. Further, the use of CeraPlus skin barriers resulted in a 14% relative reduction in stoma-related cost of care. These results hold promise for providers and their patients living with stoma looking to proactively manage their skin health and reduce the cost of care.
