Welcome to this column of Dermatologic Nursing Essentials Spotlight where selected excerpts from Dermatologic Nursing Essentials, 3rd Edition (Heer Nicol, N., Editor), are shared with the reader. This column focuses on Chapter 15.

 

Chapter 15, "Photodamage, Photodermatoses, and Aging Skin," authored by Addison, K., and Fairbrother, K. (2016), discusses the etiology of photodamage and its effects on the skin. The etiology, pathophysiology, and treatments of photodermatoses are also included within this chapter. Last, methods of protecting the skin from sun damage are listed to assist the dermatology nurse to provide patient education.

 

"Patient Education Sunscreens" discusses labeling of sunscreens including Ultraviolet A, Ultraviolet B, SPF, and water-resistance claims. It also describes appropriate use and application of sunscreens. "Patient Education Sunaware" describes the sun AWARE acronym and identifies the action steps for both prevention and early detection of skin cancer. Table 15-4, "Phototoxicity versus Photoallergic," contrasts the difference between phototoxicity and photoallergic reactions.
