Findings suggest cases of elder abuse or neglect in skilled nursing facilities. A preliminary review of ED admissions from skilled nursing facilities by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General found 134 cases of possible abuse and neglect in 33 states. Problems included injuries, physical abuse, sexual assault, and failure to provide needed medical care. "These types of abuses and neglect cannot be tolerated," Curtis Roy, an assistant regional inspector general at the Office of Inspector General, said in an audio news release. "We are urging citizens to be vigilant. Visit your loved ones often who are in these facilities. Ask them if they are being treated properly, and report potential cases of abuse or neglect to your local police and your state's Medicaid fraud control unit."
