According to the Center for Nursing Advocacy, an article in the October 7, 2003 issue of Woman's Day depicts nurse practitioners in a derogatory fashion. The article, "Do You Need a New Doctor?" by Winnie Yu states that the first indication of needing a new physician is that "you can never get an appointment, and when you do, you only see a nurse or assistant. The doctor is the most qualified to make a diagnosis or deduce your risk for a disease." The Center for Nursing Advocacy feels that this statement is telling readers that advanced practice registered nurses, including certified nurse midwives and certified nurse anesthetists are less qualified to treat patients than physicians.
