Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders

The Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders has announced the results of a new, uniquely comprehensive retrospective analysis documenting the cost and impact of chronic wounds in the United States. Published online in the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research's Value in Health journal this month, the study analyzed the Medicare 5% Limited Data Set for calendar year 2014 and determined that chronic, nonhealing wounds impact nearly 15% of Medicare beneficiaries, far more than previously suggested. The findings highlight the need for wound-specific quality measures, payment models, and federal research funding. Study authors are hopeful that documenting the significant economic impact of chronic wounds will influence policy priorities and lead to innovative payment approaches.
