If a patient's leg ulcer is determined to be the result of venous insufficiency, compression therapy should be ordered to increase venous return and reduce edema. The available compression modalities vary in the amount of stretch and elasticity, both intrinsically and extrinsically, in the manner in which they are applied. Correct application is extremely important to product effectiveness. Considerations include:

* the patient's daily activities

* the patient's tolerance of the compression modality

* the number of dressing changes required per week

* cost-effectiveness

* the grade of compression required

* the patient's and clinician's ability to apply the device

* the wound status.

The following table highlights the advantages and disadvantages of various compression modalities.
