HCV infections triple, according to a recent CDC report. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that cases of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection increased dramatically from 2010 to 2015 according to data published in the May 12 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The rise in HCV infections was attributed primarily to increases in injection drug use, with a lesser role played by better case detection. In 2015 alone, an estimated 33,900 new HCV infections occurred, and about 3.5 million people are now believed to be infected with HCV. HCV mortality rates have also increased. Half of those infected with HCV show no symptoms, so most new infections may not be diagnosed and therefore are not reported. HCV infections are also rising in women of childbearing age, according to the report.
