Kidney and eye events in diabetes decrease with intensive glucose control. A meta-analysis of four major diabetes trials with a total of 27,049 participants found that more intensive glucose control over a five-year period was associated with a 20% reduction in kidney events, primarily nephropathy, and a 13% reduction in eye events, primarily retinopathy. Primary nerve events were not reduced, however. The 0.9% reduction in glycated hemoglobin levels achieved with more compared with less intensive glucose control was associated with the reduction in risk of these outcomes. These findings support the importance of glucose management in preventing the long-term complications of diabetes. The study appeared in the March 29 issue of the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.
