The prevalence of chronic disorders has increased in a remarkably short period when measured by evolutionary scale, due in large part to overall physical inactivity. This session presents a hypothesis that genes evolved to support a physically active lifestyle, and that these "physical activity" genes are negatively altered in periods of physical inactivity. Biological explanations exist to connect physical inactivity to disease, and this session proposes that exercise biologists do not study "the effect of physical activity" but "the effect of reintroducing exercise into an unhealthy sedentary population that is genetically programmed to expect physical activity."

Actress Loni Anderson's parents both suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and died from cancers resulting from the smoking-relating illness. For the past several years, Loni has been teamed with Dr. Dennis Doherty, a world-renown COPD researcher of COPD, and travels the country to raise the public's awareness for COPD. Best known for her television work on "WKRP in Cincinnati", Anderson shares her personal story and the hardship the disease brought into her life. Dr. Doherty, professor of medicine and chief of the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center and the Lexington Veterans Administration, will discuss the signs and symptoms of COPD, and how medical experts can recognize this disease in its early stages.

Dr. Sotile, AACVPR Fellow, teaches a new paradigm for understanding and managing the psychosocial consequences of cardiopulmonary disease. Based on his best-selling book Thriving with Heart Disease, which is changing the face of cardiac care, this presentation pinpoints what patients need to learn in order to thrive. After this session, participants will be able to describe and utilize at least six brief, research-based interventions that help to shape resilience in recovering cardiopulmonary patients. He will provide solutions that can be incorporated into the routine delivery of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

To enhance the overall educational value of this event, the AACVPR will host two Pre Meeting Workshops on the morning of October 16:The Art & Science of Peripheral Arterial Disease Rehabilitation and Take a Load off Your Heart: An Innovative Approach to Lifestyle Change & Cardiovascular Risk Reduction. In addition to the many cutting-edge lectures and poster presentations, the AACVPR Annual Meeting Exhibitor Showcase provides a sneak peek at innovative products, services, and equipment that assist in enhancing our practices.
