An important part of providing optimal care for patients and advancing the NP profession is staying up-to-date on the latest research topics in the field of primary and acute care. A great way to share research findings with colleagues throughout the country is by designing a poster presentation for display at a national conference.
At the Spring 2017 National Conference for Nurse Practitioners (NCNP), held this past April in Nashville, Tennessee, we invited attendees to submit poster presentations that contained subject matter of interest to NPs in both the primary and acute care setting. We then invited attendees to vote on their favorite poster submission.
Gathering the most votes was the team of Megan M. Shifrin, DNP, RN, ACNP-BC (pictured at top) and Christy M. Rummel, MSN, RN, FNP-BC (pictured below) for their poster submission titled "Drug-Associated Electrolyte Derangements in the Adult: Critical Practice Essentials for Nurse Practitioners." Megan Shifrin is an assistant professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and is the coordinator of the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP Intensivist Focus. She has over a decade of experience in the critical care management of adult populations and currently practices at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her research interests include the interdisciplinary approach to end-of-life patient management in critical care populations.
Christy Rummel received her master's degree in nursing at Vanderbilt University, specializing as a family NP. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is experienced in treating the entire family, from primary care to the acute care setting. She currently practices at a private practice that she helped establish. She is most interested in individualized holistic medicine, preventive medicine, and comprehensive care to find and treat the root causes of chronic conditions through the framework of functional medicine. Poster abstract
Multiple medication classes are associated with electrolyte abnormalities in adult populations. The additive and synergistic effects associated with concurrent use of several medication classes place adult patients at risk for lethal electrolyte derangements. NPs practicing in both outpatient and inpatient settings should be aware of patients at risk for pharmaceutical associated electrolyte abnormalities. In addition, NPs need to increase patient awareness of the recent Food and Drug Administration warnings associated with both prescribed and over-the-counter medication classes and their known electrolyte imbalances.
