Abstract

Patients with somatization problems typically have a history of moving from provider to provider as they attempt to receive a diagnosis. A careful history may facilitate early recognition of the problem. Once diagnosed, the clinician must have a management plan that specifically targets underlying needs. An empathic relationship, goal setting, and access to the provider, with established limits, set the stage for providing care for patients who may otherwise continue to seek other providers and fail to receive necessary treatment.
