Abstract

A new vaccine against Ebola virus may be effective and safe to use in an outbreak. Results of a large randomized trial of an experimental Ebola vaccine, published online on December 23, 2016, in the Lancet, showed that the vaccine, when used immediately in people presumed to have been exposed to the virus in a ring cluster around a laboratory-confirmed case, was well tolerated and effective. According to experts from the World Health Organization, the vaccine trials remain ongoing, and while it could take a number of years to bring the vaccine to market, it could be used now in an emergency under certain circumstances.
