Plastic Surgical Nursing, the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses, presents the latest advances in plastic and reconstructive surgical nursing practice. Written for plastic surgical nurses, Plastic Surgical Nursing strives to encompass all areas of plastic surgical nursing. The journal features clinical articles covering a wide variety of surgical and nonsurgical procedures such as patient education techniques and research findings, as well as ethical issues and trends in this expanding clinical nursing specialty.

All manuscripts must be submitted online through the journal's editorial manager (EM) Web site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/psn. This is a very efficient and easy-to-navigate site to upload your article. Once registered, EM will provide guidance to assist in the submission process.

 

Submitting an article through EM will require coordination of these components. Having these documents ready to attach or include during the submission process will help expedite the process.

  

1. Manuscript-An electronic copy of the original manuscript should be prepared using a standard word-processing program (Microsoft Word preferred).

 

* Borland's Medical Dictionary (28th ed.) and Webster's Dictionary (10th ed.) should be used as standard references. There are several software programs available that work with your word-processing software to automatically format into the APA format. Examples include:

* Manuscripts must be in Times New Roman, with a font size of 12.

 

* Manuscripts should be double-spaced and have 1-in. margins.

 

* It is important to include page numbers at either the top or the bottom of the page.

 

* Manuscript with no author information.

 

* Borland's Medical Dictionary (28th ed.) and Webster's Dictionary (10th ed.) should be used as standard references.

 

* Scientific (generic) names of drugs should be used when possible.

 

* Copyright or trade names of drugs should be capitalized and placed in parentheses immediately following the name of the drug.

 

* The manufacturers of supplies and equipment cited in a manuscript should be cited in parentheses along with the city and state or country of the manufacturer.

 

* Units of measurement should be expressed in the metric system.

 

* Temperatures should be expressed in degree Celsius.

 

* Submissions should not exceed 20 manuscript pages, excluding references, tables, and figures.

 

* Reference should conform to APA format and appear at the end of the manuscript.

 

* Personal communications should be cited parenthetically in the text (e.g., S. A. Jones, personal communication, April 1995).

 

* If a reference has seven authors or more, list the first six and follow with "et al."

 

* Any quoted material must have a corresponding page number, which will accompany the reference citation in the text.

 

* Examples Journal article: Smith, B., & Jones, M. (2000). Care delivery in the new millennium. Program evaluation: Key to success. Journal of Nursing Administration, 30(3), 15-21.

 

* Magazine article: Posner, M. I. (1993, October 29). Seeing the mind. Science, 262, 673-674.

 

* Book: Chandler, R. (2000). Nursing care delivery of tomorrow (pp. 87-103). Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

 

* An acknowledgments section may follow the text. Names of those who contributed general support or technical help may be listed in an acknowledgment.

 

2. Abstract-Prepare an abstract of not more than 250 words that briefly describes the ideas conveyed in the article. There will be a section within EM to write in the abstract.

 

3. Key words-Provide key words and/or phrases separated by semicolons that will help people locate your article in a search. There will be a section within EM to write in your key words.

 

4. Cover letter is a separate document that will be attached during the submission process. The cover letter is to include a statement of:

 

* Authorship

 

* Notifications of conflicts of interest-If the manuscript features a specific product, piece of equipment, or drug, the author should include a statement of his or her proprietary interest in the company that manufactures the product.

 

* Ethical adherence.

 

5. Author biographies (approximately 50 words each) of all authors.

 

6. Title page is a separate document that will be attached during the submission process. The title page is to include:

 

* Title of the article.

 

* All authors' names and academic degrees.

 

* The institution(s) each author represents.

 

* The complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of all authors.

 

* A complete description of any grants supporting the research. All relevant conflicts of interest and sources of funding should be included with the heading "Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding."

 

* If there is no conflict of interest, this should also be explicitly stated as none declared.

 

7. Figures and photographs should be:

 

* Numbered documents.

 

* High-resolution, camera-ready images submitted electronically as either a TIFF or an EPS file in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or QuarkXPress.

 

* Resolution of at least 300 dpi.

 

8. Tables

 

* Each submitted as a separate word-processing file (no Microsoft Excel). Tables, consisting of straight, unadorned text can be submitted as a separate word-processing file such as Microsoft.

 

* Do not submit as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet Word.

 

* Lettering should be large enough to be legible after necessary reduction.

 

* Numbered documents.

 

9. Written permissions must be obtained from:

 

* The holder of copyrighted material used in the manuscript.

 

* Persons mentioned in the narrative or acknowledgment.

 

* The administrators of institutions mentioned in the narrative or acknowledgment.

 

* Reproduction of photographs in which a patient is recognizable.

 

The use of EM has made the process of submission, review, and publication a very streamlined process. Please reach out to your editorial board members, who have made the commitment to the membership, to assist you in successfully attaining your goal of being a published author.
