Nutrition Today Welcomes 3 Editorial Board Members
We are pleased to welcome 3 new additions to our Editorial Advisory Board, Joanne M. Spahn, MS, RDN, FADA, Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA, FAND, and Adele Hruby, PhD. Each brings solid experience in their field to the journal.
Joanne Spahn, MS, RDN, FADA, is a nutritionist in the Office of Nutrition Guidance and Analysis in the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. She joined the staff in 2009 and is responsible for developing and administrating the Nutrition Evidence Library in conducting systematic reviews to support the development of the 2010 and 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and other Federal nutrition policy and programs. She served on the Federal Steering Committee for the Birth to 24 Month Project and currently serves as a project leader for the USDA-HHS Foundational Review Project on Diet and Health or Pregnancy and Birth to 24 Months (P/B-24 Project). Before joining the center, she served as project manager and lead analyst for numerous Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Evidence Analysis Library projects and assisted the development of the AND Standardized Language. Ms Spahn completed a career in the US Air Force, where she directed the US Air Force Dietetic Internship program, developed a DoD benchmark weight management program, and was selected to the rank of colonel. Ms Spahn earned master's of science degrees in human nutrition from the University of Arizona and in consumer studies from Oklahoma State University and a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition from the College of St Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey.
Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA, FAND, is owner and president of MSE & Associates, LLC, providing strategic food systems consulting and communications for the food, nutrition, and agriculture sectors. Before returning to her own consulting business, Smith Edge was the senior advisor, Science & Consumer Insights, for the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation in Washington, DC, for the past year and from 2010 to 2015 served as the senior vice president, nutrition and food safety communications for the organization, directing the overall nutrition and food safety strategic initiatives of the organization, IFIC Foundation consumer research, and external partnerships and collaborations. Smith Edge is an experienced nutrition communicator, strategic planner, and facilitator, with more than 30 years of experience. Before joining IFIC, she was the owner of MSE and Associates, LLC, providing strategic nutrition consulting services for the food and healthcare industry. She is a nationally recognized speaker in health, wellness, and food systems issues and has authored or coauthored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and 1 book. Smith Edge is a past president of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and received the ADA Medallion Award in 2009. Smith Edge is also a member of the Institute for Food Technologists, The Obesity Society, and the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). She currently services on the One Health Commission Board of Directors and completed 2 terms on the USDA National Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board, the advisory board to the Secretary of Agriculture.
Smith Edge holds a bachelor of science degree in dietetics from the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of the Board of Trustees (2000-2006) and a master's degree in public health nutrition from Western Kentucky University. In August 2009, she earned a certification in Appreciative Inquiry from the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University.
Adela Hruby, PhD, MPH, completed her public health and doctorate degrees at Tufts, specializing in epidemiology, after spending 10 years in various aspects of publishing and language translation. Nowadays, the responsible translation of science is one of her priorities. Adela recently completed a Research Fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health and has since joined the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University as a Scientist II. Her research is on diet, gene-diet interactions, and metabolomics in cardiometabolic health. Her other research interests include the health of soldiers and the global nutrition transition. She received her PhD from Tufts University, School of Nutrition Science and Policy, MPH from Tufts University, School of Medicine, and BA from Cornell University Welcome Adele, Marianne, and Joanne, we look forward to your insight and expertise for Nutrition Today.
Nutrition Today Editorial Board Member, Atkinson, Receives Honorary Doctorate
Dr Stephanie Atkinson received an honorary doctorate of science from Western University, her alma mater. In addition to being a Nutrition Today board member, Atkinson is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and an associate member in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. She is also a distinguished researcher in perinatal and pediatric nutrition and metabolism and the long-standing leader of the McMaster Centre for the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program. Atkinson began her postsecondary education at Brescia University College, an affiliate of Western University, where she completed her BA in nutrition. Atkinson worked as a pediatric dietitian at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and went on to earn a PhD in nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto. She has been a faculty member at McMaster University since 1982. Western President Amit Chakma lauded Atkinson for her numerous career achievements, which include appointment to the inaugural Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes for Health Research; serving as advisor to Health Canada, Osteoporosis Canada, the US Institute of Medicine, and National Institutes of Health (NIH); and being elected president of the ASN. Institute of Food Technologists Announces 2016 Achievement Award Winners and Fellows
The IFT is proud to announce the 2016 achievement award recipients to recognize the many accomplishments of individuals and organizations to advance food science and the food industry. The IFT Achievement Awards highlight contributions in research, applications, and service in the food science and technology industry. This year, IFT fellows Awardees and Fellows include the following:
Connie Weaver, PhD, Purdue University, received the Trailblazer Award and Lectureship. Dr Weaver was the first woman to chair the IFT Program Committee at the national level. She is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; the Science Board of the Food and Drug Administration; NIH's Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health; and vice chair of the Board of Trustees for the International Life Sciences Institute. She is a past president of the ASN and was a member of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Congratulations, Connie!
Bruce German, PhD, University of California-Davis, received the Gilbert A. Leveille Award and Lectureship, a joint award in partnership with the ASN, for his innovative research demonstrating the importance of genomics of milk in disease prevention as well as the role of milk in feeding fragile neonates (premature, born by cesarean section, small for date, etc). This groundbreaking work combined the fields of food science and nutrition. Congratulations, Bruce!
Carl Winter, PhD, University of California-Davis, received the Bernard L. Oser Ingredient Safety Award. Dr Winter's research and outreach activities focus on the risks, regulation, and public policy implications of chemical contaminants in food. He has provided US congressional testimony and participated in more than 1000 interviews. He authored 2 books and more than other 170 publications, and he is well known as an innovative educator for using musical parodies as an effective mechanism to convey food safety information. He is an IFT Fellow and received the Borlaug Council for Agricultural Science and Technology Communication Award in 2012. Congratulations, Carl!

National Cancer Institute Makes New Diet and Physical Activity Data Available
The National Cancer Institute is providing data for researchers to develop novel analytic approaches for quantifying physical activity and dietary exposures. The Interactive Diet and Activity Tracking in AARP (IDATA) Study is a methodologic study of device-based, Internet-based, and conventional self-report instruments for assessing physical activity and diet in epidemiologic research. Scientists still have much to learn about the relationship between physical activity, diet, and disease. Limiting factors of current research are a lack of understanding about the measurement error properties of common assessment instruments and how to combine instruments to better measure food intake and physical activity participation. Instruments used by the IDATA Study include intensive 24-hour recalls of diet and time use, diaries, questionnaires, screeners, accelerometers, inclinometers, and urine biomarkers. Extensive documentation for the IDATA Study is available, including a study summary and descriptions of the data collected. All IDATA Study requests are reviewed by NCI IDATA Study leadership. Upon approval, investigators will be granted access to the requested data for a limited period. These data are available to all qualified investigators for studies of physical activity and nutrition, and interested investigators can request access to IDATA Study data via the Cancer Data Access System at https://biometry.nci.nih.gov/cdas/idata/.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Lucille Beseler Becomes 2016 to 2017 President of AND
Registered dietitian nutritionist Lucille Beseler, president and owner of the Family Nutrition Center of South Florida, begins her 1-year term on June 1 as the 2016 to 2017 president of the AND. A past president of the Florida AND, Beseler received the organization's Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award in 2007 and 2010. She served on the South Florida Health Care working group, appointed by US Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Beseler established the Family Nutrition Center of South Florida in 1991, as one of the first nutrition practices pioneering HMO coverage of nutrition services dedicated to pediatrics. Beseler created 2 subsidiaries of Family Nutrition Center to focus on wellness and nutrition reimbursement: Family Nutrition Communications, a wellness and events staffing company creating unique nutrition screening programs utilizing registered dietitian nutritionists at more than 300 high-profile events including golf tournaments, tennis opens, street festivals and home and garden shows; and Bill it! MNT, a billing and practice management company created specifically to perform insurance billing for RDNs. Beseler is a professional speaker and author who received Florida International University's 2009 Paths of Public Health Award in Nutrition and Dietetics for community work in the area of childhood obesity. She is a graduate of Queens College-City University of New York and earned a master's degree from New York University. Congratulations, Lucille!!!

ASN Announces New Officer Slate: Marian Neuhouser, Elected President
The ASN announced that Marian L. Neuhouser, PhD, RD, took office as president of the ASN on June 1. Dr Neuhouser is an expert on nutritional status and cancer risk. She is a Full Member in the Cancer Prevention Program, Division of Public Health Sciences, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, as well as core faculty in Nutritional Sciences and affiliate professor of epidemiology at the University of Washington. Dr Neuhouser received her PhD in nutritional sciences from the University of Washington in 1996. Her research focus for the past 20 years has been the role of nutrition and energy balance in the prevention and survivorship of breast and prostate cancers and other diet-related chronic diseases. She is principal investigator or coinvestigator of multiple NIH-funded grants and contracts ranging from controlled feeding trials to large population-based cohorts, including some based on special populations such minorities, the elderly, and those experiencing health disparities.
