Deliver Infant Medications in Pacifier
The new Kidz-Med pacifier medicine dispenser helps caregivers deliver liquid medicines to infants and toddlers. The pacifier, manufactured by Lord Richard Imports, has a graduated reservoir that holds up to 5 ml of liquid medication. By gently depressing the built-in plunger, or by the baby's sucking, the medication is released.
All parts may be sterilized to prevent reinfection. For more information, call 1-877-206-3225 or 845-255-6489.
Computerized Drug Dosing System Introduced
RxFiles Corporation has introduced the Intelligent Dosing System (IDS), a software system that helps clinicians prescribe the most effective drug dose for patients. The tool determines the dose response curve or "fit" of drugs and helps individualize the next dose.
IDS contains three software applications designed for a handheld, personal digital assistant or computer. The three applications include DoseRx (a "next" dose calculator), Interchange Rx (a therapeutic interchanger that switches patients between drugs, from brand names to generics, or between drug classes), and PracticePrescribeRx (a graded prescriber training simulator) to introduce new drugs, refresh experience with seldom-used drugs, and document proficiency among prescribers.
IDS provides a precision and accuracy rate of 90% to 97%, according to the manufacturer. The manufacturer defines accuracy as the exact dose needed for the patient to reach a specific response or marker on the next dose. For more information, visit http://www.rxfiles.net or call 941-483-3784.
FDA Clears Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Test
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Digene Corporation's high-volume sample throughput instrument application for Hybrid Capture 2 Chlamydia/Gonorrhea testing using its Rapid Capture System. The Rapid Capture System detects Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) DNA and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) DNA in cervical specimens.
Through automated microplate processing, the Rapid Capture system allows increased throughput of Digene's Hybrid Capture 2 CT/GC Test.
The FDA approved the Digene HPV Test as an adjunct to the Papanicolaou test for cervical cancer screening, but not as a primary cervical cancer screen. More information is available at http://www.digene.com.
Pulse Oximetry System Introduced
Nellcor introduced the OxiMax Pulse Oximetry System, a technology platform that expands the clinical potential of pulse oximetry monitoring. According to Nellcor, the system incorporates intelligence into both the sensor and the monitor, improving the flexibility of the monitoring system to meet changing clinical needs.
The OxiMax continuously monitors arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate for all patients (neonatal to adult). The system includes a line of interactive OxiMax sensors, including the MAX-FAST Adhesive Forehead Sensor. The forehead sensor responds to changes in SpO2 1 to 2 minutes sooner than digit sensors.
A message function provides troubleshooting tips for optimal sensor application, and an event report allows the alarm history to travel with the patient for quick assessment at points of care. For more information, visit http://www.nellcor.com.
Single-Use HbA1c Test Available
The FDA approved a single-use device for measuring hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Metrika Inc.'s A1cNow Monitor, a finger-stick test, produces immediate quantitative HbA1c results.
The disposable, pager-sized device provides results in 8 minutes from a single drop of blood. Patients must gather a drop of blood (with a pipette), mix the blood with a reagent, and apply the sample to the A1cNow Monitor. The device displays the result as a percentage of total hemoglobin. For more information, visit http://www.A1cNow.com or call 1-877-212-4968.
