Last year's Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care took place September 20-23, just 9 days after the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, DC, and western Pennsylvania. As those of us who attended the conference struggled to make sense of what had happened and to keep our focus on learning how to better care for our skin and wound care patients, Mary Jos was lying in a hospital bed, struggling to survive the attack on the World Trade Center in New York.
On Saturday, September 21, little more than a year after she was critically injured, Ms Jos will share her story of determination and healing from within as the special guest speaker at the 17th Annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care. The multidisciplinary conference will be held September 21-24 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas at Reunion, Dallas, TX.
Ms Jos was working in Two World Trade Center when hijackers deliberately slammed a commercial jetliner into the building. As we all know too well, thousands of lives were lost in the World Trade Center attack. Ms Jos was one of only 17 people working on floors 78 and above in Two World Trade Center who survived. She sustained superficial, partial-thickness, and full-thickness burns over 20% of her body, plus deep shrapnel wounds in her left arm, leg, and scalp.
The lecture by Ms Jos will be part of a special opening ceremony paying tribute to the nation's health care professionals. It will immediately precede the grand opening of the exhibit hall.
WELCOME TO THE WOUND ACADEMY
If you are relatively new to skin and wound care, you might consider registering for the Wound Academy at the Clinical Symposium.
Designed to provide newer practitioners with the basics of skin and wound care, Wound Academy will consist of 5 lectures:
* Session 210, Wound Academy I-Prevention, Principles, and Practice: Skin and Wound Care Basics- In this first lecture in the Wound Academy track, attendees will learn about general wound care principles that apply across various chronic wounds (faculty: Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, CCNS).
* Session 215, Wound Academy II-Prevention, Principles, and Practice: Pressure Ulcer Care- Pressure ulcers are common in all settings, and their management has become a quality indicator for health care organizations. This presentation will provide a general outline of pressure ulcer prevention guidelines, assessment principles, and treatment interventions (faculty: Barbara Bates-Jensen, PhD, MN, CWOCN).
* Session 305, Wound Academy III-Prevention, Principles, and Practice: Vascular Ulcer Care- This Wound Academy lecture will combine theory and practical application of the care essentials for preventing and treating vascular ulcers. The speaker will share her insights on improving assessment skills, treatment outcomes, and documentation (faculty: Mary Y. Sieggreen, MSN, RN, CS, CNP, CVN).
* Session 310, Wound Academy IV-Prevention, Principles, and Practice: Neurotrophic Ulcer Care- The objective of this lecture is to describe the risk factors and etiology of diabetic foot ulcers as a foundation to screen, risk stratify, and provide prevention for high-risk patients with diabetes (faculty: Larry Lavery, DPM, MPH).
* Session 315, Wound Academy V-Prevention, Principles, and Practice: Dressing Options- The final Wound Academy session will bring together a variety of currently available wound contact materials and provide information on their physical properties. This session is intended to help improve the process for choosing the most appropriate products to best meet the needs of the patients we serve (faculty: Andrea McIntosh, BSN, RN, CWOCN, and Linda Galvan, BSN, RN, CWOCN).
Lectures will take place on Sunday, September 22, and Monday, September 23. Practitioners who attend the Wound Academy track will receive a take-home test to use as a teaching tool in their practice setting.
