In the October/December 2001 issue of The Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing, there was an interesting and informative article on the "History of the Hospice Nurses Association" (2001;3[4]:128-136). However, there are a few points that I believe need clarification. On page 131, Amenta wrote of a two-part Delphi study that led to two published articles. The titles of those articles as listed in the JHPN article are incorrect and should read: "Developing a Certificate Course for Hospice Nurses: A Delphi Survey of Subject Areas"1 and "Organizational Factors to Consider When Developing a Certification Program for Hospice Nurses: A Delphi Survey."2
At the time I conducted the Delphi survey, I was serving as an on-site Education Coordinator for both the International Hospice Institute and St. Anthony's Hospice in Amarillo, Texas. I was also a contracted project coordinator for the then-named Academy of Hospice Physicians. However, the implementation of the Delphi survey was not financially supported by International Hospice Institute. Instead, I conducted the Delphi survey on my own because I was interested in the issue of certification for hospice nurses.
I hope this information is helpful to readers who may be interested in locating these articles or understanding more about the survey and its purpose.
