Women are at greater risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) from diabetes. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the August Diabetologia found that, although all patients with diabetes have a steeply higher risk of CHD, women have a 44% higher relative risk (RR) than men. Women with diabetes also had a 44% higher RR of fatal CHD than men. The researchers used data from 64 cohorts (culled from studies and databases worldwide) involving a total of 858,507 patients and 28,203 cases of incident CHD. The differences in risk were consistent among subgroups of different ages and geographic areas.
