Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is frequently encountered in rehabilitation. Because of issues such as lung hyperinflation and irreversible adaptations by the respiratory and lower extremity muscles, this disease population brings unique challenges to rehabilitation. This review article updates the current knowledge on the disease process, structural and functional adaptations, as well as some rehabilitation strategies appropriate for older adult patients.
