Maureen Shawn Kennedy's excellent editorial describes a real problem in nursing care-that of jeopardizing patient-centeredness by delivering rote care. I thought it was significant that the answer to this problem could be found in one of the Reflections articles published in the same issue. "Hiding a Tender Soul," by Cheryl Kane, describes taking the time to look at our patients as human beings. The Reflections column has highlighted this concept in a wonderful manner over the years. It's the concept that brought me to the nursing profession, and one I emphasize with my nursing students.
