Abstract
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure for elderly individuals with osteoarthritis of the hip joint. Most postoperative guidelines are based on biomechanical aspects of the surgical procedure and clinicians' experience. To optimize a patient's functional recovery, a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation should be utilized. Such a program should include preoperative counseling and inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Clinicians should consider specific aspects of the surgical procedure when implementing postoperative rehabilitation programs. In addition, clinicians should recognize postoperative complications and reasons for prolonged pain after surgery. Appropriate outcome measures should be utilized to determine progress during rehabilitation. The following manuscript reviews common considerations for postoperative rehabilitation following THA procedures.
