Abstract

This article will provide an overview of several different types of complex emergencies that may have public health impact and nutrition consequences. Some of the information may be common sense things we have forgotten, and some information will stimulate your thought and help you prepare to cope in an emergency situation. Nutritional risk is commonly elevated in complex emergencies and is most likely to occur when the crisis is protracted or recurrent. Individuals at the greatest nutritional risk are pregnant women; infants and young children; elderly individuals; those who are housebound; individuals with chronic illnesses or conditions such as diabetes, renal dialysis, or physical handicaps; and those with limited English proficiency. Specific guidance and direction to applicable Web sites are provided.
