This has been such an exciting year with the newly developed Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) examination.

I am so proud of our CANS task force, test writers, our management firm (Perri), and C-Net for making this examination a reality. The first official certification examination will be offered during the October 2013, 39th Annual Convention in San Diego, CA.

To take the CANS examination, you must:

1. Be currently licensed as a registered nurse in the United States, its territories, or Canada. Practice within one of the core specialties of plastic/aesthetic surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, or facial plastic surgery (ENT).

2. Have a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience as a registered nurse within one of the core specialties, in the role of general staff, administrative, teaching, or research capacity within 5 years prior to application.

3. Have spent at least 50% of practice hours within the core specialties during two of the preceding 5 years.

I want to thank ASPSN for their continued support. They have offered 4 certification examination grants for 2013. Two grants will be awarded to sit for the CPSN examination and two grants will be offered for the new CANS examination. They want to promote continued education and career development among their members. These grants are available only to ASPSN members and cannot be used for examinations that have already been taken.

The PSNCB has developed a task force to update our certification and recertification qualifications. I will keep you posted of any changes. I am looking forward to the Convention in San Diego, CA, October 11-15, 2013. If you have any questions regarding certification in either CPSN or the new CANS, please attend the PSNCB round table discussion during the convention.

Respectfully submitted,

Darlene Jumpp, BSN, RNFA, CNOR, CPSN
