Provision of breast milk on advanced care neonatal units increases. Despite that news, only a third of units providing advanced (special or intensive) care in 2011 provided more than 90% of infants with human milk; that percentage was up, though, from 27% in 2009 and 21% in 2007. The use of banked donor milk increased, too, from 12% in 2007 and 14% in 2009 to 22% in 2011. Western states were most likely to provide human milk. Southern states were less likely to. Banked donor milk was used more in Western states and in states that had a milk bank nearby. Hospitals with advanced neonatal units need to adopt policies that make mothers able to supply breast milk, and they should set up relationships with donor milk banks to help mothers who cannot breastfeed, suggest the authors in the June issue of Pediatrics.
