Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forgive the ones who don't and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it.

I would like to encourage those registered nurses who have been working in plastic surgery or within one of the core specialties, aesthetic, ophthalmology, dermatology, or facial plastic surgery (ENT) and have a minimum of 2 years' experience to think about becoming certified.

The benefits of certification are professional and personal as well as tangible and intangible.

* Professional recognition and credibility. Certified nurses are respected for their specialized knowledge and competence. They are recognized by colleagues, superiors, patients, and families.

* Contribution to the profession. Certified nurses raise the bar of the nursing profession by setting the standard of nursing excellence through advance knowledge.

* Career advancement and opportunity. Research shows that certified nurses have an upper hand against noncertified colleagues in relation to promotions and job security. Certified nurses are also sought to provide expert opinions, teach, and contribute to the nursing literature.

* Personal accomplishment. Certified nurses report a sense of pride in their achievement and their job; they articulate feeling more empowered and having greater self-confidence than their noncertified colleagues.

* Better wages. Research reports generally higher salaries for certified nurses than those who are not certified whether via hourly wage differences, differentials, or the ability to use certification to achieve advancement on a clinical ladder.

* Quality of Care. Public awareness of the value of nurse certification continues to grow; certification offers health care consumers an elevated comfort level and confidence in the care delivered. In addition, more and more research links certification with nursing knowledge and clinical judgment that impacts patient care.

The review course and both the CPSN (certified plastic surgical nurse) and the CANS (certified aesthetic nurse specialist) examinations are offered in October 2013 at the 39th Annual Convention in San Diego, CA. This will be the first official CANS examination.

Make your reservations soon for ASPSN 39th Annual Convention in San Diego, CA.

Respectfully submitted
