ABSTRACT: Skin is the body's physical barrier to the outside world. Its primary role is to protect the body from organisms or toxic substances, while maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. Because skin interfaces with the outside world, it develops an ecosystem that may be colonized with bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mites.
