More nurses are entering baccalaureate and graduate programs. Preliminary data from an annual survey conducted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) show a 3.5% enrollment increase in entry-level bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs and a 22% increase in RN-to-BSN programs. These figures reflect a growing interest among nurses and employers alike in the nursing baccalaureate, says the AACN. Graduate programs also saw growth, with increases of 8% in enrollment in master's programs and almost 20% in enrollment in doctor of nursing practice programs. Qualified applicants are still being turned away, however-more than 52,000 in 2012-although that figure is lower than last year's count, which topped 58,000. Shortages of clinical placement sites, faculty, and funding are common barriers to acceptance, according to the AACN.
