Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the learner's competence with knowledge of nutritional strategies for frail older adults.
TARGET AUDIENCE: This continuing education activity is intended for physicians and nurses with an interest in skin and wound care.
OBJECTIVES: After participating in this educational activity, the participant should be better able to:
1. Analyze how normal aging, sarcopenia, anorexia, malnutrition, and Alzheimer's disease impact the nutrition of older adults.
2. Apply evidence-based guidelines to improve nutritional status and wound healing in older adults.
ABSTRACT: The objectives of this continuing education article are to analyze the aging process and its effect on the nutritional status of frail older adults; determine how sarcopenia, anorexia, malnutrition, and Alzheimer disease increase the risk for pressure ulcer development and impact the healing process; and to apply evidence-based nutrition guidelines and implement practical solutions for wound healing.
