Abstract
ABSTRACT: Atopic dermatitis is a common dermatological condition. Adherence to treatment is a major problem in effective management of patients with atopic dermatitis. A literature search was performed for research articles regarding adherence to treatment. Six factors identified in the literature were related to increased adherence to treatment. They were (a) early follow-up office visit, (b) short course of therapy, (c) patient vehicle preference, (d) written action plans, (e) nurse-led education, and (f) technology. Poor adherence to topical therapy is a serious issue in atopic dermatitis. Providers should utilize research findings to improve treatment adherence and consider lack of adherence if treatment fails. There is need for further research as much of the literature has very small sample sizes.
