I read "The Ethics of Authorship" (Editorial, September) and want to thank the authors for sharing their experiences and expectations.

I've recently come across this same phenomenon. In one instance, a fellow nurse felt bullied by a peer who thought she shouldn't be listed as first author; moreover, the peer wanted to be included in the byline, even though she hadn't provided any substantial content. In another case, I asked a nurse-author who submitted a manuscript to the journal where I worked about any assistance she might have received and was told the manuscript had actually been written by employees of a medical device company, based on a poster the nurse had presented at a conference.

Examples like these are upsetting. I'm glad the editors at AJN are raising this issue.
