Most observers are agitating for physician payment reform, although the best payment system has not yet been revealed.
Before any big decisions get made, leaders of the Society of General Internal Medicine want to make sure that decision-makers understand the potential pitfalls of any new approach.
"Every way that doctors get paid has inherent conflicts of interest, whether it is fee-for-service or salary or capitation or some form of bundled payment," said Steven Schroeder, MD, Professor at the University of California San Francisco, and Chairman of the newly formed National Commission on Physician Payment Reform, which is preparing a report on how physicians are paid and how pay incentives are linked to patient care.
