Health data on hydraulic fracturing are limited, say experts. Representatives from academia, government, and industry met in Washington, DC, to discuss the health impact of hydraulic fracturing, commonly called fracking. The complex process, which is relatively new in the United States, is used to extract natural gas from shale rock through horizontal drilling and the use of chemicals such as silicon. Major concerns include air and water contamination, as well as short- and long-term effects of the chemicals used in the process on workers and local residents. Speakers called for better collaboration among agencies, improved metrics for determining health consequences, and transparency and clarity from the experts and industry.
