'Sexting' by minors may not be as common as feared, according to a study in the January 2012 issue of Pediatrics. Researchers interviewed 1,560 children ages 10 to 17 years. Information on three types of sexting was obtained: receiving nude or nearly nude images, posting or forwarding them, and appearing in or creating such images. Children who answered yes to any of the questions were further questioned about how explicit the content of such images was. The percentage of youths who engage in some level of sexting is likely lower than 10%, in contrast to previous studies suggesting that the percentage might be as high as 20%, and the proportions who appear in or create sexually explicit images meeting the criteria for child pornography are likely much lower.
