The way Children's Hospital Boston handled J.J. and his family is very impressive ("Care of the Suicidal Pediatric Patient in the ED: A Case Study," September 2011). However, not all communities have a hospital that is focused on pediatrics and has that many child-specific resources.
An article published in Pediatric Emergency Care last year discussed the top mental health concerns of children presenting to the ED and their caregivers.1 It offers insight into the ways in which health care providers can better assess, treat, and refer pediatric patients with mental health problems.
