Adele Herwitz, MSN, RN, of Dedham, Massachusetts, died September 4 at the age of 92 after suffering a major stroke. Born on April 21, 1919, in Swampscott, Massachusetts, Herwitz served as a head nurse at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and held nursing positions at Sydenham and Bronx Veterans hospitals in New York City. During World War II, she served as captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. After the war, she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from Columbia University. She also served as a nursing association executive of the American Nurses Association (ANA) from 1952 to 1969. Herwitz championed the causes of nurses around the world, and represented the ANA at Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous March on Washington. In 1969, she left the ANA to become executive director of the International Council of Nurses in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1977, Herwitz returned to the United States to lead the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools in Philadelphia, a nonprofit focused on preparing foreign nurses for state licensing tests.
